A first date can be both exciting and stressful. You want to make a good impression, look sexy and beautiful while remaining classic in your appearance. A myriad of thoughts run through your head; should you purchase something new, should you wear clothing you already own, which girlfriend should you call to help you choose your wardrobe?

As you prepare to go on your date, here are some tips to help you feel and look your best throughout your planned time together.

Venue:

The venue of your date is the best place to start when determining what level of dressing should occur. If you are going on a daytime date (perhaps a brunch), you might keep your look casual; in the evening you can take your look in another direction. Either way, verify with your date so that you can steer your choice of dressing in the right direction.

What’s in Your Closet?:

Think to yourself: “What do I already own that makes me feel the most confident, beautiful and comfortable”? Shopping is always fun. However, keep in mind there are times when you try on something in the store, purchase it, and then when you look in your own mirror, your opinion of the outfit has changed.

360 in the Mirror:

I would suggest narrowing your looks down to just two. This way, the decision making process is easier. Once you have your two looks, try on your two looks with both your shoes and bags. Next, stand in front of your mirror and take a inventory of your entire look. Does everything fit comfortably and do you feel confident with your appearance from the front and back. If you choose a low rise pants or jeans, sit down in the chair. Is there any exposed skin or under garments?

Generally Speaking:

Most men like for women to look sexy but natural and dressed appropaitely for the situation. There is not a strong desire on their part for their date to look like they just stepped off the set of a high fashion photo shoot.

With this in mind, be decisive about what you will wear. Next, to take some of the stress out of the situation by allowing yourself enough time to get ready. In the end you want to be pulled together, but look like you did it effortlessly.

Finally, get an opinion from someone you trust about your outfit choice. Sometimes a second eye will see things that yours may not have caught. Plus it makes getting ready more enjoyable.

Go-to Items:

  • Jeans- Dark wash jeans are by far the most versatile piece you can choose since you can dress them up or down. If you decide to wear jeans, a trouser jean works well if you want the feel and look of a pant. Skinny jeans always work great for a sexier look. However, if you are going to an upscale restaurant, then jeans may not be the best option.
  • Dresses- A dress with a simple silhouette that hugs your curves works well for many venues, whether it is the movie theater, jazz club or restaurant. When choosing a dress, keep in mind the activities you will be partaking in. If for any reason you think you may be uncomfortable or unable to be involved in the activity, proceed with caution. It can take away from your evening and not make either party involved happy.
  • Cardigans- A nice, lightweight cardigan is great for a spring or fall evening; depending on the area you live in, it might work well on a summer night if it tends to get cooler in the evenings where you live. In addition, interior temperatures always seem unpredictable. Having one will keep you warm when needed without getting in the way or seeming like a hassle to carry.
  • Shoes- For shoes, any style goes and whatever you choose should complement your overall look. I would stay away from wearing a newly bought shoe. If you start to have foot pain, it may show and distract your attention away from your date.
  • Other Accessories- Bags and jewelry should suit the attire without being overly flashy. Highlight the features on your face rather than wearing an extra-large, excessively adorned, earring. Since is your first date, you want the focus to be on your face personality and smile (which is the best accessory to have on).

Finally, confidence is the ingredient for the evening. Confidence will take your look to the next level and will make you even more attractive. So relax and enjoy your evening. In the words of Diane Von Furstenberg “The biggest mistake a woman can make is not to be herself in public or private.”
